Professor Nicholas Harvey has been awarded the prestigious 2023 OrtoMed Medal.

OrtoMed is the Italian Society of Orthopaedics, Medicine and Rare Skeletal Diseases.

He received the medal during the 18th OrtoMed Congress held in Florence, Italy.

Improving patient outcomes

Every year the Ortomed Medal is awarded to a leading expert in bone health.

It honours efforts and collaborative vision that share knowledge between orthopaedists and specialists in metabolic bone diseases. Its ultimate aim is to achieve better outcomes for patients.

Prof Harvey was presented this year's prize by OrtoMed Executive Director Professor Maria Luisa Brandi.

Fragility fractures

Prof Harvey is an investigator in around £50m of grant funding and has published over 300 articles. He is Chair of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Committee of Scientific Advisors.

At the Congress, he presented a lecture that included work by the IOF to achieve a world without fragility fractures.

He said: "I am greatly honoured to receive this prestigious award. It reflects the hard work and excellence of many individuals across Southampton, the IOF and wider collaborations.”
